where beliefs become biology, habits become identity, and shifts in perspective can create profound change.

Drawing from science, psychology, and lived experience, these reflections are designed to help you expand what you believe is possible for your health, your relationships, your work, and your life.

I have a photo of forks and spoons curled into shapes they should not be able to hold. I bent them with my hands. People see it and they stop. They want to know how.

This is how.

I was in a class at the Monroe Institute. It was on Zoom. Each of us was at home, with our own flatware in front of us.

There were several meditations, five or so, built on Monroe’s audio technology, which helped us to focus our attention and set our intention.

After the first meditation, I bent a spoon. So did a few others. As we continued through the exercises, more people succeeded. There were around a dozen of us, and by the end, more than half the class had bent their utensils.

I was holding my own spoon. Stainless steel. I began rubbing the metal between my fingers. My hands grew warm. I felt the heat move into the steel.

Then there was a moment. The metal felt pliable under my fingers. The resistance I expected was gone. I applied pressure, and the spoon followed. On the next meditation I twisted it.

The twist moved me even more than the bend. Since I had already crossed the threshold of believing the spoon could change shape, the next step felt natural.

The experience left me with a simple realization. The capacity had been there all along. What changed was my willingness to believe in it.

I find myself returning to this experience often, both in my own life and in my work with clients.

We tend to treat our limits as facts.

The spoon will not bend.

I cannot do that.

This is as far as I go.

Some limits are real. But many are simply stories we have repeated so often that they began to feel true.

Stories about who we are.

Stories about what is available to us.

The moment we stop treating those stories as facts, something changes.

We begin to see choices where we once saw constraints. Possibilities where we once saw obstacles.

What you believe is possible shapes what becomes possible.

And possibility expands the moment a belief does.

You do not need a spoon to discover this, although bending a spoon makes the lesson difficult to dismiss.

You can see it anywhere you have already decided the answer is no.

The conversation you keep not starting.

The opportunity you keep postponing.

The change you filed under the label of “impossible” because the circumstances are not right.

Pick one.

Ask yourself whether the limit is truly in the circumstances, or in your belief about them.

The next morning I woke up and bent a spoon.

No meditation.

No class.

I bent it because I believed I could.

Stay Present, Thrive Daily!

Julia

Share Sage Minute

The information provided here is for educational purposes only and is not intended as or substitute for medical advice or treatment. And like a lot of women on the road, I used to come home stiff, sore, and a few steps behind on my routine. The hotel gym was rarely the answer. What I actually needed was a suitcase-ready approach targeted to the places travel hits hardest: my neck, my lower back, and my feet.

Over time, four things made the cut. For longer trips, I bring them all. For shorter ones, a subset. They all do something a hotel gym cannot.

Here is what I pack.

1. The Acupressure Neck Pillow

A small, squishable cylinder covered in plastic spike florets. I call it “poor man’s acupuncture”. The spikes distribute a concentrated pointy pressure across hundreds of points, which appears to work through two mechanisms: gate-control inhibition of pain signaling at the points of contact, and a brief local increase in blood flow.

A meta-analysis of 23 randomized clinical trials in 2,400 participants found acupressure superior or similar to physical therapy in pain reduction for low back pain.

Li YH, Wang FY, Feng CQ, et al. Clinical Efficacy and Safety of Acupressure on Low Back Pain: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. Evid Based Complement Alternat Med. 2021;2021:8862798.

I bought the Dakini Acupressure Mat and Pillow Set with Mini Pad. The pillow comes with me when I travel: under the neck in bed for 10 to 15 minutes, or behind the lower back when sitting. The first minute is uncomfortable. Then the discomfort gives way to a release. He recommended it, and it has earned its place in every suitcase since.

The Posture Pump is a mild mechanical self-traction device. It has a curved frame that gently distracts the cervical vertebrae, restoring the natural curve of the neck. You lie back into it and use a small hand pump to gradually inflate a cushion that lifts under the neck, creating gentle expansion at the cervical discs. I use it for five minutes every morning, or at night. It is light enough to pack, and the curved shape leaves room for clothes to tuck inside.

Cervical traction works by creating space between the vertebrae, which can ease pressure on discs and nerve roots. A meta-analysis of seven randomized clinical trials found that intermittent cervical traction significantly reduced neck pain compared to placebo immediately after treatment.

Yang JD, Tam KW, Huang TW, et al. Intermittent Cervical Traction for Treating Neck Pain: A Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials. Spine. 2017;42(13):959–965.

Five minutes. That is the whole protocol.

Where to buy: Posture Pump Dual Disc Hydrator (Model 1400-D)

3. The Softball

A bright yellow softball. Nothing more. I use it in two ways.

When sciatica is whispering, I lie on the floor and roll the ball slowly under my glutes until I find the spot that hurts in a useful way. I rest my weight on it for a minute. The release travels.

On planes, I sometimes sit on it, gently rolling from one place to another. I press it against the same trigger spot in my glute, and within a few minutes the sciatica eases. This tends to release foot pain for me as well, when I have it. And on a longer trip, it can settle the lower back tension that builds up from a day of sitting.

Here is why that works. The piriformis is a deep glute muscle that sits directly over the sciatic nerve. When it tightens, it can compress the nerve and produce pain that travels down the leg. Myofascial trigger points in the piriformis and surrounding glute muscles refer pain along predictable patterns that include the buttock, the lower back, the back of the leg, and sometimes the foot.

Probst D, Stout A, Hunt D. Piriformis Syndrome: A Narrative Review of the Anatomy, Diagnosis, and Treatment. PM R. 2019;11(Suppl 1):S54–S63.

Sustained pressure from a ball applies ischemic compression to the trigger point, which appears to restore local blood flow and quiet the muscle contraction. A randomized trial found that myofascial release added to conventional physical therapy significantly improved pain and function compared to physical therapy alone.

Tabassum S, Tauqeer S, Awan MMI, et al. Effectiveness of Myofascial Release Technique on ROM and Functional Disability for Patients with Piriformis Syndrome. J Popul Ther Clin Pharmacol. 2024;31(2):844–856.

A softball is firm enough to reach the deep glute layer and soft enough to be tolerable.

Where to buy: A standard 12-inch softball from any sporting goods store. Dick’s and Amazon both stock them.

4. The Osteoboost Belt

I use my Osteoboost once a day, usually as I am getting ready for bed. It also gets pulled on after long flights. The vibration feels like a gentle massage, and the device delivers targeted vibration to the hips and lumbar spine, the two areas most prone to bone density loss in postmenopausal women.

I have written about the science behind this device in detail in Osteoboost: My First Month with the Belt That Builds Bone. For travel, what matters is that it has a small suitcase footprint and runs on a rechargeable battery pack. While I brush my teeth, while I am on a call, while I check my phone. The 30 minutes fly fast.

Bone work does not have to pause because I am out of town.

Where to buy: Osteoboost.com (prescription required; telehealth option available through their site).

None of these are affiliate products.

Stay Present, Thrive Daily!

Julia

Share Sage Minute

The information provided here is for educational purposes only and is not intended as or substitute for medical advice or treatment. longevity. Each issue offers a practical method or tool - behavioral, nutritional, or environmental - grounded in evidence and lived experience.

Last month I spent five days at 40 Years of Zen in Austin. Each morning began with an EEG — an electroencephalogram that mapped my brainwave activity before the day’s work began. Hours of neurofeedback followed in individual pods. A near-infrared light helmet, Neuronic, was available for us to try. The program’s neuroscientist put its utility into brain modulation context. A structured facilitated inquiry in a small group setting was woven in throughout the day. It provided a guided framework and a safe place for eliciting deeper feelings and examining what had surfaced.

I came home wanting to understand the science behind each piece.

What Neurofeedback Does

Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that trains the brain using real-time information about its own electrical activity. EEG sensors measure brainwave patterns — theta (4 to 8 Hz), alpha (8 to 12 Hz), beta (13 to 30 Hz), gamma (40 Hz) — and the system provides feedback, typically auditory or visual, when the brain produces a target pattern. Over repeated sessions, the brain learns to access those states more reliably.

The clinical evidence base spans decades. Neurofeedback has been studied for attention disorders, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, and performance optimization in healthy adults.

Askovic M, Watters AJ, Coello M, et al. Neurofeedback for post-traumatic stress disorder: systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical and neurophysiological outcomes. Eur J Psychotraumatol. 2023;14(1):2257435.

More Than Neurofeedback

The pods were one part of a larger architecture. Before each session, we set our intention and walked through the protocol we would use inside — where neurofeedback, self-inquiry, and audio entrainment ran simultaneously. Afterward, we journaled and gathered in small groups with a facilitator to integrate what had surfaced. Breathwork was woven throughout.

What the research on neurofeedback suggests, and what I observed firsthand, is that a brain in a trained state is more receptive. The facilitated structure — before, during, and after each pod — gave that receptivity a specific target. The insights did not come from the technology alone. They came from what the technology made possible.

What Transcranial Photobiomodulation Does

Transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) operates through a different mechanism entirely. Near-infrared light in the 600 to 1100 nm range penetrates the skull and interacts with cytochrome-c-oxidase, a mitochondrial enzyme central to ATP production. The effects are metabolic and electrophysiological — increased cellular energy, improved cerebral blood flow through nitric oxide release, reduced oxidative stress, and potential entrainment of neural oscillations when the light is delivered in pulsed frequencies.

Hamblin MR. Mechanisms and applications of the anti-inflammatory effects of photobiomodulation. AIMS Biophys. 2017;4(3):337–361.

The most studied research protocol uses 810 nm light pulsed at 10 Hz, corresponding to alpha brainwaves. Several studies report increased cerebral blood flow and improved cognitive performance following this protocol.

Yeung MK, Chan AS. Can transcranial photobiomodulation improve cognitive function? A systematic review of human studies. Ageing Res Rev. 2023;83:101786.

A second widely studied protocol uses 40 Hz pulsing, corresponding to gamma oscillations involved in learning, attention, and memory integration.

Park J, Tsai LH. Audiovisual gamma stimulation for the treatment of neurodegeneration. J Intern Med. 2024;295(2):146–170.

This is the mechanism behind Neuronic, which uses 1070 nm near-infrared light in a full helmet design. The longer wavelength is theorized to penetrate deeper tissue, though its interaction with cytochrome-c-oxidase may be weaker than the more studied 810 nm. For context, Vielight — the most researched consumer tPBM device — uses 810 nm with power density running approximately 180 to 350 mW/cm² at the diode, and has over 25 published studies including randomized controlled trials.

Chao LL. Effects of home photobiomodulation treatments on cognitive and behavioral function, cerebral perfusion, and resting-state functional connectivity in patients with dementia: a pilot trial. Photobiomodul Photomed Laser Surg. 2019;37(3):133–141.

The field has not settled on optimal wavelength, power density, or delivery design.

What I Am Doing at Home

Satoria is an at-home neurofeedback system built by the 40 Years of Zen team. An EEG headband measures brainwaves in real time. The paired app delivers guided protocols for focus, calm, creativity, and recovery, adapting to your patterns over time.

I purchased it to maintain the neurological conditions that 40 Years of Zen established. It is not a replacement for the depth of that program — the technology was never the point. But as a daily practice tool for someone who already has a framework for the inner work, it is worth exploring.

I have just started using it and will report back.

If you are curious: Satoria.

A disclosure note: I have no affiliate relationship with 40 Years of Zen or Satoria. longevity. Each issue offers a practical method or tool - behavioral, nutritional, or environmental - grounded in evidence and lived experience.

I have osteopenia. Caught early, which is the good news. But as a breast cancer survivor taking an aromatase inhibitor, I know bone density is something I need to watch. Aromatase inhibitors lower estrogen. Lower estrogen means faster bone loss. It is a tradeoff I accept, and one I manage actively.

So when I heard about Osteoboost, I was genuinely excited. I could not wait to try it.

What Is Osteoboost?

Osteoboost is a wearable, FDA-cleared, non-drug device developed for postmenopausal women with osteopenia. It was developed by Bone Health Technologies and became available to patients in 2025. The device received FDA clearance and was granted Breakthrough Device designation, a program designed to speed review of technologies that may offer meaningful advantages.

Osteoboost is a belt that delivers targeted, low-amplitude, high-frequency vibrations directly to the lumbar spine and hips, the two areas most vulnerable to fractures.

The technology traces back over 50 years and includes NASA research on preventing bone loss in astronauts during spaceflight. Research indicates that vibration can stimulate bone formation and remodeling in ways comparable to high-impact exercise. See, for example:

Lu X, Duan H. Advances in vibration therapy for the treatment of osteoporosis. Front Endocrinol (Lausanne). 2025.

Osteoboost Clinical Trial

A double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial enrolled 126 postmenopausal women with osteopenia. Participants were instructed to use the device for 30 minutes per day, at least five times per week, for 12 months. Bone strength and density were assessed using advanced CT-based imaging capable of measuring vertebral bone strength and structural integrity, in addition to standard DXA scans.

In the full study population, the primary endpoint, change in vertebral bone strength, showed a favorable trend but did not reach statistical significance. However, in predefined analyses of women who used the device at least three times per week, results reached statistical significance. Compared with the sham device, these participants experienced significantly less loss of vertebral bone strength and volumetric bone density in the lumbar spine. Improvements were also seen in measures such as cortical strength and vertebral bending stiffness, structural indicators associated with fracture risk. The therapy was generally well tolerated, with no serious device-related adverse events reported.

Bilek LD, Flores LE, Waltman N, et al. Benefits of Targeted Vibration for Bone Strength and Bone Density in Postmenopausal Women with Osteopenia: A Randomized, Sham-Controlled Trial. JBMR Plus. 2024;ziae104.

The Scope of the Problem, and the Treatment Gap

A national CDC survey from 2017–2018 found that about half of U.S. women between ages 50 and 64 have low bone mass. By age 65 and older, roughly 27% meet criteria for osteoporosis.

Sarafrazi N, Wambogo EA, Shepherd JA. Osteoporosis or Low Bone Mass in Older Adults: United States, 2017-2018. NCHS Data Brief, No. 405. CDC/NCHS. March 2021.

For years, the standard of care for osteopenia was essentially this: take calcium, take vitamin D, do some weight-bearing exercise. On their own, these strategies have limited evidence for meaningfully slowing bone loss in women with osteopenia. So for a long time, you just got the diagnosis and waited.

Osteoboost offers a non-drug approach that may help address a longstanding gap in options for osteopenia.

My First Two Months

I wear it for 30 minutes a day, belted around my hips as instructed, while I move through my morning routine. The device app syncs automatically, so tracking is effortless.

How does it feel? Honestly, like a tapping, or what some might call, a percussion massage, similar to a nail salon chair. A low hum against the lower back. I like the feeling.

These daily sessions have also brought noticeable relief to my lower back, an unexpected bonus. This inspired me to bring it with me for my travels. It was small enough to pack and became something I reached for after sitting on a flight.

I will be coming back to all of you next year to report on my DXA scan results.

A Disclosure Note:

I was an early investor in Osteoboost because I believed in the underlying science before the product came to market. I have no affiliate relationship with the company and receive no compensation for writing about it. I did. I wanted to know whether I was doubling up on nutrients, if there were cleaner brands, and whether I was paying for quality or marketing.

The Solution may be here! SuppCo is an AI-based platform built to simplify the chaos of supplements. It’s not another tracker or store. You just scan the label of the vitamins or powders you already take, and SuppCo instantly identifies the product, checks its quality rating, and shows if your stack overlaps or misses anything important.

Why I Chose SuppCo

SuppCo takes a problem that normally requires spreadsheets and hours of research and turns it into a clean dashboard. The scan pulls data from a database of 160,000+ products, rates each brand for purity and certification, and calculates cost per dose.

It could also connect to your lab data, to flag possible overdoses or deficiencies, and if you subscribe, you can get access to custom protocols from world renowned wellness experts, including Dr. , Dr. , and Dr. , and many others.

Check it out and see if you find SuppCo as much of a game-changer as I did. fastest ways to feel better. I tested top Bay Area spots—and this playbook breaks down what works, where to go, and how to make it worth your time (and money).

🔥 Infrared Sauna

Infrared light saunas are becoming widely available in gyms, wellness centers, and through practitioners, offering a wide range of potential health benefits.

Infrared light penetrates the skin to stimulate photo biomodulation, a process that enhances mitochondrial function, boosting cellular repair and energy production. Whether it’s targeting skin health or reaching deeper tissues like muscles and joints, redlight therapy helps promote healing and rejuvenation across the body.

Modality: Most infrared saunas used in wellness centers combine:

Near-Infrared (NIR): 700–1,400 nm — mild tissue penetration, often delivered via LEDs or incandescent bulbs;

Far-Infrared (Mid and FIR): 1,400-3,000–10,000+ nm — most common in saunas, penetrates 1–2 inches into the skin, typically delivered via carbon or ceramic heaters.

Science Snapshot:

Hamblin MR. Mechanisms and applications of the anti-inflammatory effects of photobiomodulation. AIMS Biophysics. 2017;4(3):337–361.

Laukkanen JA et al. Sauna bathing is associated with reduced cardiovascular mortality. Mayo Clin Proc. 2018;93(8):1111–1121.

❄️ Cold Plunge / Cryotherapy

Cold immersion has surged in popularity—and for good reason. It can help reduce inflammation, lift your mood, and boost mental clarity.

Types of Cold Therapy:

Cold Plunge: A tub kept between 45–60°F for full-body immersion

Whole Body Cryotherapy: Sessions last usually 2 to 3 minutes—in a chamber filled with very cold, dry air, typically cooled to between −110°F and −240°F.

Personal Experience:

While I’ve used infrared for some time—for relaxation, inflammation, and skin rejuvenation—I resisted cold therapy for a long time. When I finally stepped into a whole-body cryo chamber, I was shocked—at how easy it was. The freeze doesn’t actually feel that cold, and the energy hit is instant. Think double espresso—but smoother, and it lasts all day. The cold plunge is a much more drastic experience. They are simpler to set up and maintain, which explains higher availability. See Bouzigon etal., 2016, below for the deeper dive comparing the 2 modalities.

Science Snapshot

Lombardi G, Ziemann E, Banfi G. Whole-body cryotherapy in athletes: from therapy to stimulation. They’re clearly still testing what works—adjusting packages and perks as more people get hooked on contrast therapy.

If you’re going once in a while, a 3- or 5-pack is usually your best bet. But if you're going twice a week or more, a monthly membership makes sense. The cost tends to fall somewhere between a boutique fitness studio and a luxury gym—and in my experience, it’s worth it.

🏠🔥🛁 Prefer to Stay Home?

Don’t want to trek across town or commit to a membership?
Infrared therapy is now easy to do at home—with infra-red blankets, lamps, portable sauna tents, or full in-home setups.

I’ve gathered a few options on my Amazon Storefront to help you build your own heat ritual.

Note: I’m an Amazon Affiliate.
